[본문스크랩] 홈대패 제작(영국 Philip Edwards)

by 백주현[미르] 2007. 8. 23.

It starts with a block of Beech, 9 inches x 3 1/2 by 1 1/4. Flatten on face and remove any wind. Check with winding sticks to ensure it is perfect. Then plane both edges square to the reference face. Take a look at the grain pattern. See how it runs downhill toward the right of the block? We will use the left side as the toe of the plane - this grain configuration makes for a tougher plane, the sole being less likely to chip.

Using a cutting gauge mark around the remaining face to the final thickness (1 1/4 inches)

Thickness to the lines, checking carefully as you approach final dimensions.

Now we can layout the blank.

I have made a template from some 2 inch ash. One side is 50 degrees (the bed angle) the other 62 degrees (the bed angle PLUS 12 degrees, the wedge). I nailed a small foot to the wedge to reference it against the edge when marking out.

Three inches back from the front of the plane mark out at 62 degrees.

Then insert some of your iron stock on the line to see how far back to make the bed line. Mark off at 50 degrees.

Using a square bring the lines across the to and bottom of the blank.

With a pencil gauge mark up from the sole by two inches. This will be the top of the throat opening.

Finally mark the top of the mortise with a marking gauge. Mark in 3/8 from each cheek.

Using a 3/8 drill bit drill down at the angle of the bed. Be careful to make your hole square to the sides and at 50 degrees. Stop often to check your progress. You only need to drill down half way.

Repeat for the front of the mortise at the steeper angle.

Clean out the mortise with a mortise chisel, cutting to your lines.

Done! Remember, you only have to go down half way.

Drill an 1 1/4 inch hole through the plane with a forstner bit. Don't go fully through, turn it over and complete the cut to prevent tearout.

This gives us this!

Next we will saw out the mouth of the plane. Clamp your angle wedge on the plane.

Then use a hand saw to cut to the lines, using the wedge as a guide.

Repeat for the other angle.....

and we have this. You can see how helpful the angle wedge block is!!

Using a chisel start to remove the waste...

and pare the opening flush with your layout line.

Clean up the mortise and check that the bed and the mortise are on the same plane. I used a float to make minor corrections but you could use a file or rasp.

That completesthe difficult part. Now to make the iron..

Layout the iron on the tool steel....

And saw it out with a hacksaw.......

Some filing to finish the iron. I file a bevel onto the iron while the steel is soft. Beats grinding it when the iron has been hardened!

When you are happy with the fit of the iron you can heat treat it and temper it. I will deal with this in a separate article.

To make the wedge cut out a piece of stock at a 12 degree angle. I made up a 12 degree wedge as a template.

Test fit the wedge and cut to length when you are happy. Test drive your plane!

I rounded over the corners to make it comfortable to hold and gently bevel the top edges. Lap the sole flat on sandpaper on a flat surface then lightly sand and you are ready to apply a finish.

I applied two coats of boiled linseed oil and finished off with a coat of wax.

The completed Plane - now go make some shavings!

귀찮고, 회사라 시간도 없구 그냥 해석없이 긁어 왔습니다.(한눈에 볼수있게 편집만 했습니다.)
